The Cancer Institute Foundation was formed in 2003 as a non-profit
organization to respond to the needs of patients with cancer that go beyond medical treatments
providing support services for patients, their families and caregivers, and educational programs
for the community. These programs and services aim to ease the physical, mental, emotional, and
financial needs of patients, thereby improving the quality of their lives during a most difficult
time. The Foundation is committed to improving the health of New Mexicans by providing leadership
and partnership in educational and screening programs to raise public awareness about cancer
prevention, early detection, diagnostics, and treatments. The Foundation’s ability to fulfill
its mission is made possible by the generosity of many wonderful individuals and businesses in
our community.
Some of the ways in which the Foundation has changed the lives of Santa Feans and Northern
New Mexicans…
The Foundation began providing housing, transportation and meals for financially challenged
patients in 2005. Since then over 1,500 nights of free housing have been provided and 300,000
miles of travel have been reimbursed for patients who came to Santa Fe from all over Northern
New Mexico for treatment. $6,500 in meal vouchers and grocery coupons have been given to patients
since 2009.
The Foundation has provided in excess of 2,200 hours per year of trained
volunteer assistance and services to patients and their families.
Since 2006 the Foundation has sponsored an annual free prostate screening for the community.
Over 310 men have been screened; 13 men have been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
The Foundation relies on the generosity of northern New Mexico communities as
its sole source of support.
